The Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to postpone Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State. The two security agencies said the call was necessitated by the threat of those they referred to as “insurgents” and “extremists” to cause mayhem in the country between the twelfth and thirteenth of September, 2016.
Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Don Awunah; and Garba Abdullahi of the DSS, stated this at a short media briefing in Abuja. Aside from the security agencies, some students who are to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination scheduled to hold on the same day, have also called for its postponement to allow them exercise their rights to vote. The National Chairman of the INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has however said that the commission will not postpone the election.
