ASUU to commence warning strike on October second

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says it will commence a warning strike on the second of October, 2016. A statement signed by the chairman of the University of Abuja chapter of the Union, Mr Ben Ugheoke, discloses that the Federal Government has failed to embark on meaningful dialogue with the union.
Ugheoke says the strike will last for one week, and if the FG does not respond to their demands, an indefinite strike will commence in November. Recall that ASUU, had at a recent news briefing accused the Federal Government of reneging on the 2009 agreement with the union.
ASUU’s Coordinator, Abuja Zone, Dr Theophilus Lagi, says the struggle to implement the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement is neither about the union nor about the personal benefits of the members only.
He added that the current issues in contention include funding of universities for revitalization in line with the Memorandum of Understanding the Federal Government and ASUU had signed in 2013. ASUU believes re-negotiation of the 2009 agreement will reposition the entire education sector.
