Secure Our Lives: Kwara CSOs canvass support for women as victims share horrible experiences

Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, government agencies and critical stakeholders in Kwara state on Wednesday gathered to brainstorm on the various challenges confronting the women folks with a view to discussing collaborative solutions that would improved security in Kwara and Nigeria as a whole.

At the women’s dialogue on insecurity, held at the Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Ilorin, the state capital, victims from across Kwara shared first hand experiences of insecurity to include herdsmen attack, armed robbery, assault, fraud, gender based violence, rape and many more.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Deborah Abosede Aremu, declared opened the dialogue which witnessed flow of emotions as women narrated horrendous ordeals and sought assistance to be able to survive.

 

The Chief Executive officer of glohwoc, and state coordinator of SecureOurLives, organisers of the nationwide programme, Mrs Christiana Oluwole-Abayomi, said it was an avenue to bring to bear, the women ordeals, and assist them get their lives back on track.  

She added that some of the resolutions reached at the dialogue were to secure academic scholarship for children of victims especially single mothers, empower some women to start or support their businesses, as well as provide adequate security particularly for farmers to access their farmlands and secure their goods.

 

The women also agreed on the need to embark on need assessment for some others. She charged women facing challenges especially in their homes to speak up.

On ground to offer expert advice and take up some of the issues tabled at the dialogue were the Nigeria Police, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Directorate of State Services, DSS and the National Orientation Agency, NOA.

 

Others were the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria, FOMWAN among others.
