The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Mr. Francis Enobore, has confirmed that there was a jailbreak in the Kuje maximum Prison on Friday night. He added that two inmates, who were awaiting trial for culpable homicide, are reported to have escaped from the prison at about 7:30 pm, though not through the jailbreak. He however said that the alleged mastermind of the 2010 Independence Day bomb blast in Abuja, Charles Okah, is still in its custody contrary to fears that he escaped. He added that the NPS is collaborating with security agencies and relevant bodies to recapture the fleeing prisoners.
As a result of the incident, the Comptroller General of the Service, Ahmed Ja’afaru, has ordered an immediate audit of inmates at the facility. He has also ordered a probe into the immediate and remote cause of the incident.
