The bus was involved in a head on collision with the timber truck near Puisseguin in the Gironde wine region, east of Bordeaux, after the bus had set off from a nearby town. Both vehicles quickly caught fire.

Local politician Florent Boudie, who had visited the accident site, said that it was unclear what had caused the collision that the authorities were considering high speed and weather conditions as potential factors.
