The Police Service Commission, PSC, has attributed the delay in the withdrawal and redeployment of police officers attached to Very Important Personnel and unauthorised persons in the country to lack of funds.
Chairman of the commission, Mike Okiro, who made the disclosure during an interview in Abuja, also revealed that more than one
hundred and fifty thousand out of Nigeria’s four hundred thousand police officers are attached to VIPs and unauthorised persons in the country. President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2015 directed that such police personnel be withdrawn and deployed to confront the security challenges in the nation.
Okiro, however, explained that the commission in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force, had commenced the implementation of the directives, but that the exercise was stalled due to lack of fund.
While lamenting over the development, he expressed concern that persons who served as ministers for over ten to fifteen years still go about with police security. He added that the lack of fund has also hindered plan to recruit more personnel into the force.
The chairman, however said that the Police Trust Fund bill before the National Assembly if passed into law, would go a long way to address the issue of funding for the police.
