Fourth Estate Professional Society Condemns Arrest of Journalists in Kwara

Written by on October 15, 2022

Major General John Enenche (retd.), who described the Lekki Toll Gate Shooting incident as “photoshopped” and “cropped” has said The Abuja Chapter of the Fourth Estate Professional Society (FPS) has condemned the arrest and detention of two Kwara-based Journalists, Dare Akogun of Sobi FM and Abdulrasheed Akogun, the Publisher of Fresh Insight, an Online Newspaper.

Consequently, the body has called for their immediate release, saying the act was a gross violation of their rights.

The duo was allegedly arrested and detained by men of the Nigeria Police Force, kwara state command, over a report that the Chief Press Secretary to the kwara State Governor, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye purportedly facilitated over 15 million naira of public funds to prosecute the last chairmanship election of the state’s council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

But while denouncing the act, in a statement signed by the Abuja Chapter Chairman of the body, Comrade Kehinde Osasona and Secretary, Barrister Emmanuel Ekwe, FPS described the continued attack on Journalists in Nigeria and globally as shameful, saying the everyday act is usually borne out of gross ignorance of what journalism practice is all about.

Meanwhile, the PPRO of the Nigerian police force, Kwara state command SP Ajayi Okasanmi  has  expressed displeasure at the turnout of events as both parties involved are friends of the force, in a Twitter conversation the PPRO said when both journalists, the Akoguns honored the police invitation, he took them to the Commissioner of Police for an amicable solution to be reached while the CP gave an option of tendering an apology to the Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye but both journalist opted to go to court the reasons behind his claim in 2020.

The ex-General who made the list of the one thousand two hundred and thirty-four (1,234) members of the presidential campaign council of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had come under fire on social media for his stance on the #LekkiShooting, which led Obi to declare that the LP would review the campaign council list and issue an updated list in due course.

However last night, Enenche released a press statement on his official Twitter page, addressing the issue raised and maintained that he only declared that the massacre was photoshopped because of an oath of allegiance he swore on commission into military service.

Enenche further stated that his cause for electing credible leaders come 2023 prompted him to declare his support openly for the LP candidate without fear, adding that he was sure that Obi and running-mate, Dr. Yusuf Datti-Ahmed, would provide quality leadership for a better Nigeria.
