Don cautions politicians against divisive tendencies

A Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin, Badmas Lanre Yusuf, has warned members of the political class against using religions to cause division among the citizenry.
He said it has been observed that some politicians were hiding under religions to pitch Nigerians against one another on account of their desperate bid to clinch power.
Yusuf, a former Dean of Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, stated this on Friday  while delivering his Juma’ah sermon at Hilal Crescent Mosque, Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin.
He admonished religious leaders to resist being used as kitchen tools through messages they pass across to their followers, saying that such messages could be misleading.
Yusuf added that Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic and religious inclination, have constitutional power to exercise their democratic rights of voting candidates of their choice in the general elections and should be allowed to willingly do so without encumberances.
The former Provost of Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, however, appealed to eligible voters in the state to apply same method used in the last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections for the March 11 gubernatorial and State House of Assembly polls and be peaceful in their conduct.
Yusuf also urged members of the Muslim community to unite for the progress of the country.
