2018 census to gulp two hundred and twenty-three billion naira
The National Population Commission, NPC, has proposed a budget of two hundred and twenty-two billion Naira to conduct the 2018 national census. The Chairman of the commission, Mr Eze Duruiheoma, revealed this when he received members of the Senate Committee on Population and National ID Card on an oversight function to ascertain the preparedness of the commission towards the 2018 census.
Duruiheoma noted that the proposed sum will be used to enhance the conduct of a technology-based census using the Direct Data Capture machine. He explained that lack of funds and persistent underfunding of the Commission’s activities are the major reasons why the commission shifted the 2016 census to 2018.
Duruiheoma noted that only two-point-one-seven billion naira has been disbursed out of the four-point-four billion naira budget of the commission for 2016. He said the trial census will come up in first quarter of 2017 while the actual census will come up in 2018.
On his part, the Chairman of the committee, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, noted that the budget is huge in the face of Nigeria’s recession. He therefore urged the commission to employ other sources of funding once the President assents the budget.
